The Lab

I’m trying to set up a lab of (retro)computers.

That lab will allow remote users to connect to these computers and use them as if they sat in front of them : switch them on/off, reset, load programs, etc…

The main idea is to use KVM device which permit to remote control computers.

The project is still in early stage.

Purposes of this project is

  • Play software (games, tools) remotely
  • Compile remotely
  • Could be used as a testbed
  • Training center (for certifications for instance)

It will also be possible to connect to the serial port of these computers. The goal is to get debugging info. Serial port can also be used as a console (if possible).

Aimed Computers:

  • C64
  • Amiga
  • Things as old as possible but which don’t be someone locally to be managed (I would have loved to use WarGames  Imsai 8080 but someone has to manage his switches locally)
  • still in production familly of computer : AIX, HPUX, IRIX

Eligible computer needs to have:

  • a video output which is or can be easily converted to VGA, DVI or HDMI
  • a keyboard port which is or can be easily converted to PS2 or USB
  • a mouse port which is or can be easily converted to PS2 or USB
  • (optionnal) : a serial port

One can also imagine a virtual part where computers are virtual machines.

One can also imagine a browser part where computers run within the browser.

The ultimate goal is to let user choose which kind of hardware he/she wants.

I’m still wondering how I can make it the least expensive for me (who say profitable)?

I’m looking to PDU which will allow to electrically switch off computers when they’re not used.

But for the moment I still even don’t know if someone will need/use it 🙂

If you’re interested, PLEASE let me know!!
